Made my first trip as a Floridian this morning. Grabbed 3 dozen live shrimp and was at one of the north bridge piles by 5:30. Immediately started catching snappers. Got my limit of keepers and a pile shorts. And a nice eating dize but CR spec. And at least 6 puffers. A good first trip. No big snaps, had one about 12” the rest 10.5-11”. Let a couple of barely keepers go,

Nice catch. I've thought about fishing the Gandy bridge itself from a kayak, anyone done it? Wondering how safe it would be. I've also thought about kayaking to the skyway rockpiles on the side that's closed for us pier fisherman.

Carye, Lots of boat wakes and the current was moving once the tide turned but otherwise appears just as safe as any other open water spot. If you have a good size yak and the muscles, I'd say go for it. I fished around the 6th pile from the east, but the water is deep closer to the east too.

Thr only way, maybe, I would try it would be with a peddle or powered yak. But thats not to say it couldn't be done. With most of the inshore dinners catch and release it may be the only place you get a meal out of a kayak this summer.

I’m taking my yak ssp this summer. It’s peddle Native Slayer 10’. Not long but wide. You can stand on it. As long as you don’t take it out too far and pick mellow tides I don’t see a problem. Just use common sense.

weve had our asses handed to us out there on a 28 ft open fisherman before. just please dont.😐 that place is haunted brother. theres just too many things that can go bad. the tides and currents aint the problem. its the other humans. some of them folks out there are crazy. throw in a little alchohol and youve got a disaster waiting to happen. its way rougher on the water than it looks like from the pier!!!!! especially with summer thunderstorms rolling in.

I’ve done a fair bit of open water kayaking. I’m sure on the right day the Gandy and the Skyway would both be manageable. That being said, I’ve had storms pop up on me that I couldn’t out run and been in currents that I couldn’t out paddle. Very scary to be out there in a yak when things go wrong and if you’re gonna do it be dang sure the conditions are perfect.

Got conned in to a ferry to Eggmont few years ago...we took an ice chest full of bottled water and left it at the ferry dock, wandered around a bit then went back and found 10 people drinking our water about to die from thirst....never forget it, but the kicker was an old white bearded dude that left the island in a yak...I watched him go out of sight and thought about all the bull sharks that hang in that pass...ferry grabbed us, took us back and we saw him loading up....that's badass

I think some of you guys are getting soft here. As long as you use common sense you will be fine. Do not go out too far. Stick to slack tide and close to the shore. Life’s short so go a little crazy. Of course the first time the current over takes me and I start praying to all the gods, I’m sure I’ll be singing a different tune. I do recall in my college days white water paddling as soon as the ice melted in early spring in New Hampshire. Totally stupid but damn exhilarating.

someone died in a kayak trying to go under the Gandy just a couple weeks ago, was on the news. With that being said, the Gandy is my go to for kayak fishing, but I'm not stupid about it. Never try to go under that bridge in a Kayak. When a lot of water is pushed through a narrow opening the current gets real dangerous. However, the grass flats on either side of the bridge are a great place to fish, just stay out of the boat channel. If you go early morning on the weekend your good, but by about 1100 the Gandy Beach becomes the Redneck Riviera, complete with lots of idiots on jet ski's and boats. Once you see the jet ski's, just go home, the noise kills the bite anyway. But in the early morning, I get about every species out there, just look for some structure - i.e. oyster beds, break wall, or even those metal towers out there in the water, all will hold fish.

I was the only truck in the parking lot when I launched, by time I put the boat on the trailer at 11am, the parking lots was 80% full and 5 boats were lined up to put in. It was pretty crazy.
So the signs say the "park" is open sunrise to sunset, do they enforce that? I launched well before sunrise.

Put your Yak in on the south west side of the sky way near the small bridge. paddle south along the seawall , you will enter the TC bay in about 1mi. not many power boats in there because it is shallow

There is a yak launch there that leads into Terra Cela. It’s all there... grass, oysters, channels, sand bars, crazy contours, currents. Great spot to paddle east and drift the length of the cut leading into Tampa Bay on an outgoing casting spoons, mirro lures or whatever your confidence is in. Either use the designated canoe launch, or you can also launch right at the point.
