Got to the ssp 7am. Got 2 strikes on first cast but they were both short. Thought it was going to be a killer of a day. WRONG! It was about 30 minutes before I seen one shoot behind my Got-cha. That was it for the next hour so, so I decided to move out farther on the pier. I stopped and took a few cast and got another hit right next to the pier. The fella fishing down about 100 feet or so was using white crappie rigs and he caught one then he got cut off at least 4 or 5 times. He had two other nice Macs on that the dolphin took for his breakfast. I tried jigs but didn't have any luck. I finally tried a dude with a rubber tail and caught one and several swirling around it as I pulled it in. It was 21 inches and the ones following it were every bit as big. There were several large Macs shooting behind the dude but not hitting it. The fella fishing down from me must have landed 4 or 5 by the time he decided to leave about noon. There was no bait in the water. I would say the Macs are here it's just a matter of finding what they want to eat! The one I caught had absolutely nothing in its stomach.

Good report, the few macks I've seen out there were doing the same thing, not all that interested in spoons. I believe they are suffering from "Mad Mackerel" disease which only occurs when I'm fishing

Try these floats with the crappie jigs so yo can cast them farther and keep them in the water longer. You fill the float about half full of water to add weight. They work well with live bait too. Just remember that a mack much over 20" will probably straighten the hook on the crappie jigs. If you have a big one get off and start getting hits with no hookups check the hook.

Not using any crappie jigs They can be quite effective when the macks are keyed in on small bait.

Hey Sctaz, FYI, Those clear floats work even better if you fill them about 2/3 full of clear silicone. Then when they crack they still float and you don't have to put a new one on.

Thanks ray, I'll try that on a few. I usually don't use a stop on the top side of the float so I can let it drop down in the water column to find the fish so it's basically used for casting weight.

Sctaz, The silicone & water filled are the same as far as how they slide on the line. Let me tell you how I fill the bubble and it will make more sense. Take small finishing nail and push it in the hollow pin, push the pin and nail into the bubble, inject the silicone in the bubble, push pin and nail out of the bubble, remove the nail, let set over night. There you have it the bubble is ready to thread your line through the pin the same as when you put water in it..

If you get into the bigger macks you can turn to the Betts Speck Rigs that have stronger hooks than the crappie jigs.

"Do you tip these with a piece of shrimp?"
Not when fishing them for macs. Just jig them or put them behind a bubble. When the macs are thick, doubles are common. Some guys will trim the hair to just behind the hook to make them look smaller. They look a lot like glass minnows, silversides and bay anchovy, which is what the Spanish are feeding on a lot of times.
