just got a report from Captain Marrio Castello the Spanny Macks are mixed in with the trout at the mouth of Crystal River. Thats pretty far north from here. Thinks its pretty safe to say spring has sprung.😉

This info is interesting to me do you think it is possible the macks might have gone a little wide of tampa bay either because of runoff of red tide if they got that far north allready

The Last Cold Front just chased them off for a few days. They will be back as the Weather & the Water Warms up a bit.

The macks hit Naples pier pretty good today...along with the Pompano. Many limits of macks.

We caught brought 7 macks home from the SSP yesterday. Best time was 10:30-noon. They were very sporadic after that. Fish seemed larger than previous years on average. I come down from MI this same week every year, so that is all I have to go on as far as history. Gotcha plugs is all we throw, I'm sure some of the spoon experts could have done much better. Flipper got two from us. Looking forward to the next couple days.

navygmc If you are near Marco Island there's a county park and boat ramp on the south end of the island where you can cast from the seawall. A few years ago we were there and I caught so many macks that I ended up feeding the feral cats some filets before we left. They were good size and all were caught on a white spinner bait with a white rubber skirt. I never got cut off because the head and skirt were way below the wire where the line tied on. I still have the spinnerbait but there's hardly any paint left after so many mack attacks.

Macks aren't picky about what they attack, I saw a kid getting them on a Diamond jig yesterday, anything that's moving is fine with them

Not normally a good area like some other places.

From what I am reading on a couple different sites, the Macks are moving away from the shallows at the Piers.

definitely weren't there yesterday, spent 12:00 to 5:00 on SSP and didn't see a single mac or anything else edible caught, bait fish was light, very small and sparse, managed to catch a couple on sabiki but they were really small, understatement to say disappointing day, think I'll wait until reports of bait and macs actually being there in good numbers

In the good days you would have already seen 10 macks fly over the rail by the time you parked on the pier. Now you see a bunch of birdcrap and maybe a couple pinfish come up on the way to your parking spot. Don't forget to parallel park and try not to knock over the overflowing trashcans while ur at it.

And don't park underneath any light poles unless you're upwind, the Comorants will cover your vehicle with white chalky crap

The crapping cormorants. Maybe they can train them to crap on the customers as they're packing up, what could be better than being crapped on after getting skunked, sunburned and dehydrated.

I have learned that if you watch the tides and plan accordingly you will have success more times tha not. A cooler with ice and water along with a snack for lunch never hurts. The fish are at the piers you just have to adapt to the situation, the 20th both Mack and sheep heads were plenty, the 21st no Mack’s on SSP but plenty of sheep and snapper were caught.

Thanks for the info Tears, I left the pier at 3pm but was on the shallow end near the 1st bath to the entrance, I saw the wind picked up and looked more mackerel like conditions but not my day for Mack’s I guess, sure did get a couple of good size sheep 😃

Will the macks bite after dark? I guess throwing a spoon after dark doesn't make sense as its the shine of the lure that the fish go after......... Going out to the skyway tonight, but it will be close to dark before I get out there. Going to at least start on the North side and go from there.

Macks Normally Don't Bite after Dark. Forget using the Spoon because they cannot see it. If You have some Greenbacks, Fish under a Street Light & You might have some Luck.

You want bait for the night.. usually fish in the street light for them. One with lot of bait on it. Right now, I wouldn't even try catching mack at night. Don't see much bait. I would rather fish for snapper... much easier and better tasting imo.

Any mackerels caught over at the north pier? No reports on Facebook on Capt. Mike's Site(North Skyway Pier). When it is raining all day like today, then it is time to sit back & have a drink & come up with a Game Plan.

I went to the south pier this morning at sunrise. Tossed out a 7/8 ounce Gotcha plug (bought at the baithouse) and had about 15 bites. Caught 3, lost one foul-hooked in its back while I was pulling it up, and lost 2 Gotcha plugs to frayed line
All the action was between 7am and 8:45. I was fishing off the ocean side by lightpole 10
First time out too! I came on vacation and will spread the word to my buddies in North Carolina
