We plan a scouting mission to Ft Desoto late this afternoon. Will let you know if the macks have arrived yet. My wife and I went to Ft. Desoto and got there around 330pm. First thing I did was to walk both piers. Bay Pier: Hardly anything taken aside for a couple of sheepshead. Water appeared cloudy. No macks! Walked the Gulf pier next. Only keeper fish I saw was a whiting. Otherwise little pin fish. Not many anglers at either pier. Went to try a bit of shoreline/wading. Far east side of park very shallow and weedy. Then tried the East picnic area beach. Water very dirty and tried for half an hour. No bites. Went to the Gulf pier to actually fish for an hour before sundown. Lot of pin fish bites and got a few small pinfish. Did not see any bait fish. Other evening anglers returning empty handed. No Macks! That is the word today Ft. DeSoto and this backs up both what Parkpass and Mackerelman have been saying.

No signs of macks Went with pomp jig and caught 12 nice whiting. A friend fishing commercial boat south of Stuart caught a ton....of mack's. Can't post his pic since I don't have permission.

Well they aren’t at the SSP today. So far I could fill a cooler with small spot tails and had a couple short sheepies. Nothing worth keeping yet. But it’s a cool, breezy, cloudless day and this beats yard work!

i would rather have less bites which if when early season starving fish rarely occurs, than keep loosing leading edge 25-30 inch Spanish and King Mackeral is all I am saying, Strickly speaking live bait fishing. Keep seeing alot of reports af getting bit off. Id rather land the big bite, but thats just me. Even if it takes longer or i get less bites. It dont matter how heavy a mono leader you use if they chew past the hook yer gonna get plinked. So simple to twist a small #4 treble up. Not always mind you, but there are times when it is the better choice. Just sayin. 😐

I've even had Mack break-offs using 60lb. leader fishing with Live Bait with several varieties of fish. Granted, the Bigger Fish do have Bigger Teeth such as a Large Mack, King Mackerel or Barracuda. Using bait on a hook usually does tend to have more break-offs than using a Spoon since the spoon is larger than a regular hook. The Treble Hook is a Good Idea.

I just saw a report of a guy on Facebook that caught 2 Macks in Sarasota. So the Macks are definitely coming up this way to Tampa Bay. Good Luck People.

I fished the NSP last night for a few hours. Although the sardines where running thick, I did not catch any Macks and did not see any caught either. After about two hours of casting down at the end I went back closer to shore and caught some sheep for dinner!

The macks finally showed in Naples today. Started crashing bait. Some decent fish over the rail. Up to about 18-19"
Still big whiting being caught as well. Bigger than normal

Bigger than normal That really surprised Me this Year when they hit Here in Tampa Bay before Naples & the Cape Coral/Fort Myers area. When I saw the posting that the Macks were hitting Sarasota I knew that it would only be a day or two. Plus they arrived here in Tampa Bay a few days earlier than in past years. It may have been the Warm temperatures that We have been having in January. Almost every Year, they arrive here around February 15th or around February 21st. History does repeat itself according to the Fish.
