I went out there right after the Posting of the Macks & stayed for several hours & there was nothing. All We did was get Our line wet. There were No Rumbles in the water. My Girlfriend says She wants to see pictures of Macks Caught before She goes out there again. I cannot blame Her. People that I talked to out there said they did not see any Macks or Macks caught. A few people laughed when I asked them. That is not good. I did see some small Snapper & Sheepshead caught. I also saw a couple Pompano caught at Tear's Favorite Hangout. I only saw one keeper.
The 15th may be a Better Bet as I posted. We still need the Winds out of the South to bring up the Macks. Macks will not pass Naples, Fort Myers & Sarasota before they get here. The Macks needs to eat while on their way.

Water temps per Bay News 9 are now 65 F. Would have been good if that initial report had photos. I hope to check out Ft Desoto on Friday. If we go, will post report.

When I report that I've caught fish you can take my word to the bank. Don't always post pics but that's one lie I won't tell. And I won't hesitate to report that I've been skunked.....that's happened so many times I'm beginning to smell like a skunk

After a disappointing day, We went home & Fished T-Bone Steaks out of the Fridge with our Rods. They may not taste like Macks but they were good. If I say the Macks are in, then they will be in with Pictures.

Just came across an old log of mine in the fishin shed from 1999... here's an entry dated Friday Febuary 19, 1999. Went out Thursday night and fished the outgoing for Grouper. Fished the paddletails again but not so good. Gotta find out where that dude gets his jigheads.. did get 2 at daylight on Sardines 1- 22 inches and a nice 28 inch close to 10 lbs. went back up to the check station area to look for the big girls. Only saw 2 and they were all squirrelly and not feeding. wont be long now. ( sheepshead) water seems to be getting warmer Nice schools of small to medium Threadfins starting to trickle in. Threw the net at the Y and got enough to fish with. 30 nice big Spanish and 2 Snake Kings freelining on wire with # 4 trebles did the trick. kept getting cut off on the longshanks and mono cus the Spanish were hitting so agressively and these were all jumbos. solid 20-25 inch mature Mackeral. mid-day outgoing at the corner. overcast skies. freeline live threadfins 72 degrees
so there you have it.

The BP oil spill did more damage than we'll probably ever know. The fishing seemed to go dead nothing like what it used to be after the spill. I was out there on SSP in 07 08 09 every year huge schools of macks would show up in the spring I have yet to see anything like that since. Who knows.

www.newschief.com/sports/20190207/good-catches-of-redfish-continue-to-be-caught-in-tampa-bay-area-along-with-locations-elsewhereThis is Tampa News Chief fishing report published yesterday 07 Feb. Sounds like they are coming...... See actual report below, it says At Anna Maria "a few Spanish mackerel, and few bluefish are being caught in the sound." and at Fort Pierce (East Coast but about the same latitude as Tampa Bay) "and Spanish mackerel and bluefish are being caught from the jetty" "6: At Anna Maria, there’s some redfish up to 30 inches in Longboat Pass. They’ve been in there on and off all winter. Lots of sheepshead, a few Spanish mackerel, and few bluefish are being caught in the sound. The near shore reefs are holding good amounts of sheepshead and mangrove snapper. Some pompano are being caught along the beaches, reports Capt. Scott Moore of Bradenton (941-713-1921)." "At Fort Pierce, offshore, a few kingfish have been caught in 60-80 foot. There’s also some mahi and some sailfish starting to show up. Mangrove and lane snapper are good for bottom anglers. At the inlet, pompano are biting in the surf and Spanish mackerel and bluefish are being caught from the jetty. Sheepshead, black drum, and some mangrove snapper are being caught in the inlet and around the bridges. Redfish are on the docks in the river to the south. The trout bite is still good to the north around Harbor Branch, reports Clint Walker at the Fishing Center of St. Lucie (772-465-7637)."

Really? when thats a bad thing when i was a kid and they stopped netting i remember my BIL and i would hit the south side with bikes and home made rigs to pull coolers and tackle was so cool to see 4 or 5 macks chase them even ran out of jigs and tied white strips from a t-shirt tied to a jig head and still caught some....If they are netting plus all the red tide etc were screwed.... I been telling my son about those days he still has yet to catch his first mack yet...Hope they stop netting again....

Mack netting is big business in Alabama waters. They ship them to western states and northern states. Guess they're crazy about them. Not much of a market locally as everybody can easily catch their own

One report from a friend fishing from the Fort Desoto & Edmont Key area: "There are a lot of small scaled sardines and Spanish sardines between the ship channel and mullet key. Pelicans are diving off of east beach in Ft. Desoto. Still, I didn't see any mackerel being caught, just sheepshead."

A Message Today from Capt. Mike at the NS Skyway Pier: Today's reports is about the same as all week. Sheepshead trout black sea bass whiting and some pompano. I did get a report from a buddy of mine who said he started catching some mackerel early in the week with a gotcha lure. We need warmer water for the Macks which is not far away.
