Weather looks favorable for some yak fishing on Friday. Thinking of going out to either the flats next to the NSP or on the St. Pete side of the Gandy. I have not tried the flats heading onto the NSP before, but I see people out there all the time. Are they productive, and more importantly, might they be productive this time of year? Or might I be better off staying over by the Gandy?

Bay temp is 67 so I'd fish the channels where it's warmer

where might one launch a kayak that is in close vicinity to a power plant in the bay? Re residential canals that skyjay mentioned, We have many here in Madeira Beach. There is a boat launch ramp at the City Marina on 150th. Go to the city website and look at the map of the city. You will see all the fingers and canals. The Marina also sells bait as well as Don's Dock,Hubbard's Marina and Rick's Bait and Tackle which is also on 150th. Good luck.

You can launch at Apollo Beach and fish the Big Bend warm water outflow....long drive if you live in Pinellas

How about "The Narrows" at Indian Shores? Have not fished The Narrows. There is a boat ramp @ Park and Gulf Blvds. You could launch there and work your way N. There is a small park on Park Blvd next to the Home Depot just E of Seminole Blvd. That goes up into Cross Bayou I think. That might be a place to try. That water may be more brackish.

GPS shows every canal and channel in the bay, if it's dark it's deep water and I'm not talking about shipping channels

Ya, I have not fished the narrows either, but I'm thinking I would find some deeper water there. I saw the boat ramp @park and gulf blvd. I think you have to pay a fee to park there though.......I also know where the park is next to home depot, and I always say I am going to try it there, but have yet to do so...... maybe that might be my best bet for this time of year.

I found a brand new yak dolly at the SSP access road back in Nov, both tires were flat. Took it home, aired the tires, next trip out I gave it to another yaker that was launching. How much do those suckers cost?

I Hope we both report back with a succsessful outing and get dragged all over the place by a trophy fish ur two:-). So a guy ended up telling me about a residential neighborhood yak launch which gets you into the back waters by Weedon Island. So I tried that with pretty good results. Took three hours to limit out on the sheeps although no big ones. The biggest two were just over 14 inches, the rest of my limit was running around 12 1/2 - 13. But boy were the shorts biting back there. I would guesstimate (if that's a word) that I released over 30 shorts with most running around 7-8 inches. It was like catching Brim in a pond. I couldn't keep a line in the water longer than about 10-15 seconds without a bite. So, while no monsters were caught it turned out to be a pretty fun morning and the weather was great!

I fish Apollo beach regularly from kayak in January and February. Cast net some live mullet from the nature preserve then freeline or bottom fish them live in the channel. I paddle over to the flats on the other side of the channel and fish the edge for cobia, sharks, big jacks.

Nice report, I love sheepshead!
Live or fresh dead shrimp? I've found when they are biting like that, fresh dead shrimp chunks work as good.

Well its Friday again....... looking for a good place to get back out in the yak tomorrow. Either heading back to the back waters behind Weedon island or I'm going to switch it up and stay closer to home; launching into Long Bayou from the park next to Home Depot on Park St. Guess it will depend on the weather, see some rain chances for tomorrow morning......

So I guess I owe you guys a report from the weekend! Friday - limited on Sheepshead in the bay in about 2 hours with many shorts thrown back. Sizes were 16,15,14.5,14,14,12.5,12.5,12. Made fish chowder! Saturday - took the yak out and launched behind Home Depot on Park St. like I said I would. 1st time launching there. That is some seriously skinny water back there. Most spots were only about 1-2 feet deep. Found a couple holes to fish in. Started out dead, but by about 1100 it was nice and warm. Several (I think 5)short Snook released, the largest was maybe 15 inches. All caught casting shrimp to the edge of the mangroves. Other than that it was a lot of trash fish (hardheads and ladyfish).
Weather looks great for this week, I bet next weekend will be excellent!
Tight lines.......

Back out on the yak on Saturday. Fished next to the Gandy. Conditions were windy with a lot of chop for a yak but I managed to get my anchor to stick. Fished the edge of the channel. TRASH FISH FEST. Could not keep the ladyfish off the shrimp. Several double hookups on ladyfish up to 20 inches. Kept moving to get away from them. Managed one small trout, then got into the Hardheads, kept moving then got into the stingrays...... you get the picture. I did get snapped off twice. One bit through the leader, most like likely a small shark - although I guess it could have been a Mack, can't say for sure. Other break off I had on for over 5 minutes. I'm guessing nice red or black drum. He was steady peeling line like a red/drum, managed to turn him and he came straight at the yak. Reeling fast and hard to keep up with him then he past the yak and kept going, eventually broke the line (20lb mono).
With all those Mack reports from the SSP, I think I'm going to bail on work a little early today and head over to the SSP to cast a spoon for awhile. I'll get on here tomorrow and let yall know how I did on the Mack thread!

You fished the main channel that runs under the bridge or the channel that runs along the Gandy on the south side?

You fished the main channel that runs under the bridge or the channel that runs along the Gandy on the south side? Sorry should have specified. I fished basically the corner of where the channel that runs along the Gandy on the south side meets the drop off between the main channel and the grass flats. Also went up onto the grass flats for awhile with no result. All of the fish were hanging right on the edge of the drop-offs. Does that make sense?

Yeah it makes sense, they were staging to eventually cruise the flats, but you are fishing the wrong channel and those flats on the south side are constantly patrolled by other fishermen
