I decided to give it a go even though conditions were not good on Monday evening. Fished from 430 to 730 pm. Just caught several small pig fish which were nice bait size. Fished the other rod with a long shanked hook with the bait. Had two large fish on, one got wrapped under the posts, the other made a strong run to the side and pulled the bait off. My guess they probably were shark. Crabs were also active, almost got 3 blue crabs and did catch this curious fellow which I call a 'spotted crab'. Shadowxmas thinks it is a box crab. Any comments on what it is and if it is useful for bait or food? I released it.

we've always called those Calico Crabs. Theyre always invading our nearshore beach pinfush traps. interesting side note is these Crabs are the prefered bait on the east coast Florida pier scene for giant ocean Permit. The World Record was supposedly caught on a " Calico" crab.

I talked with Shadowxmas about the crab, We thank Skyjay for pointing out what type it is. We researched more into it and found it is edible and tastes somewhat like the tasty blue crab. Its not often eaten due to its small size. Along with other crabs, it is good bait. Some fishermen have said that it is good bait for cobia and tarpon.
I want to add about the fishing that night. I had the small pier virtually to myself as it was windy and only in the 50s. A few tourists came by and one couple told me they went to the Skyway piers and related that nothing was being caught there. Glad I had 4 layers on. My only long term companions were 3 Great Blue Herons.
