I have a bit of an unorthodox question...
Im in the process of rigging a electric trolling motor to my kayak and plan to power yak out to anclote key this spring and summer for a little over night camping and shark fishing. Mostly my fishing efforts will be for sport but harvesting a few fillets would be fantastic. This brings me to my delimma....
One, my trips will envolve limited room for gear, ice and coolers are out of the question. See any way feasable to stringer a shark (say a black tip in the 3’ range)?
Problem two, I susspect the game warden will be trying keep a brotha down. Anyway i could transport the fillets from the key to the shore without violating any fishing regulations?
And lastly if I can not leagally transport the meat only, is there a way I could harness the shark and mush him back to shore? The harness itself doesnt seem too difficult, its more the steering im concerned with. I was thinking maybe a cane pole with a mullet hanging from it :-) ?
Thanks in advance. Any advise, opinions, ideas and insults welcomed.

I have a conventional answer: I would not try shark fishing given the problems you cited. Fish for other species with the kayak. There are two decent piers at Ft. DeSoto as well as lots of shoreline to try shark fishing. Not to mention very good fish cleaning stations at those piers.

Ft desoto area is long been known for holding lots of sharks i dont know how bad red tide messed up the area this year but i know for a fact i have seen many sharks over there in the 3 to 8 ft range small bonnet heads all the way up to bulls small tigers an even a couple hammerheads i refuse to wadefish there when the mullet are thick when you see big sharks run onto the beach an jumping slap into mangrove trees chasing fish it scares you a little

Thanks for the replies, I will be sure to give ft. Desota a chance. Can you bank fish there as well? I really dont have much desire to peir fish for sharks. My back would not appreciate me ascending a fish that size.
Next time i see a park officier i will ask him about my delima and if its a no go ill just release them. Yaking to the key and sharking is as much about the trip for me as the destination. When i lived in ohio i would yak out somtimes over a mile to secluded sand bars on the river to cat fish then paddle back up in the morning.
Dont get me wrong, i do appreciate the convenience of pier fishing but a few times a year i like a little “adventure”.
About stringering a shark, obviously they need a little room to swim to stay alive. Ive also heard stressing them would cause them to release more ammonia into the flesh, do you think keeping them tied up over nite would effect the taste of the meat? Maybe even make it better than killing after landing?

think outside the box. float an igloo over with dry ice to keep your meat cold. Drag it behind the yak. I did this on the Everglades Wilderness waterway paddle and it worked great. easy peasy.
