Hello again all. Just introduced myself in the intro thread and did read read the link to the codia linked thread in the stickies. Not much info regarding time of year or water temps exct.
I hooked a descent cobia in early Dec at anclote pier and noticed a pic of one on here around the same time. Is it over? From my understanding they migrate to the keys in the winter. Before i hooked up on that one i had really only vaguely heard about them and not considered fishing for them. I relise its hit or miss at best, especially fishing from a stationery location but it doesnt take much hope to get me motivated:-). I got mine bottom fishing with a catfish tail and they do run hard. He slipped off the hook halfway up the pier and now im seeking revenge.
Any and all tips and advice welcomed, thanks in advance.
Also side question: is there a good source to betermine local water temps and have you found it to hold true or be usefull when targeting species that migrate based on temps or times of the year?

Guess what... anclote pier is really good during winter for Cobia.. that's where they go if they didn't make it to the keys. Also a bunch of other fish... Just keep fishing it and you will find out.

I don't know about now, but earlier this month there were some caught at TECO. You can fish from the nature presere from shore (for free), might be worth a shot. Should be some big Jacks and Sharks there too.

Thanks for all the replys, I found a pretty nice article regarding the migratory patterns of the elusive codia. We have some “resident cobia” that stick it out all winter in the bay and around power plants. Looks like 67degrees is also the magic number and acording the the link we are in that range . www.onshoreoffshore.com/cobia-fishing-tampa-bay.html

10 inch Black/Dark Culprit Bass worm on a jighead or rigged weedless is a great Cobia getter at Anclote and Apollo Beach run off areas. covers alot of area fast. and the fish love em. just cast and retrieve slow roll swim bait style thank me later😎

Thanks for the tip, I’ll definitely give the wormies a try, im a bit disgusted with artificials at the moment. Ive been doing more than my share of chucking and winding latley
Im going to try drifting some small blue crabs under a baloon today.

Question for you....are you using them sorta like a shallow top water in the channel? I like weedless soft plastic jerk baits in areas with no current on calm days but never really tried what i believe your getting at. Also not familiar with the term THANKS FOR THE HELP MISTER 🙏

There's some monster fish in that area, but also some boat traffic

There's some monster fish in that area, but also some boat traffic agreed, dont spool up your new shark reel with $200 worth of braid and spend a hour yaking out a bait because a boat will fly by and burn all your line off. Ive seen it done and had it happen to me by Charlotte harbor(not that much braid). Lol
