I've never worried about CCA approved tape measures. If the fish isn't 1/2" to 1" over minimum, depending on species, I throw it back. Only on Grouper and Stripers will I keep right at legal. And when I do that I pack up and leave.

If ya get one just on legal size and you're worried about shrinkage
take a picture / video of the fish and ruler if it shrinks and they try and ticket you you will have enough evidence to have the ticket thrown out

It cost him near $2000 in fines and lost equipment. It's not worth the risk, IMO. Not sure about FWC, but here in MD they can confiscate all the fishing equipment you have with you while fishing. If you are using a 4X4 on the beach and have pole holders mounted on the vehicle that can also be considered fishing equipment. I once witnessed a guy in North Carolina have his truck & boat towed away by the NCWRC. I don't take any chances.

The NCWRC are ruthless. I'm from SC and if you get caught just over the line into NC waters with a legal SC fish in the box that is illegal in NC it's a ticket. A 12" mack in the spring usually doesn't have enough meat to bother with cleaning. My general rule is 15 @ 15". For a quick reference the diameter of the opening on most 5 gal buckets is 11 7/8".

Several Years ago at the Fort Desoto Gulf Pier, I witnessed a guy that got caught with 2 Macks to small & 2 Macks to many & He got fined and the FWC confiscated His Rods & Reels & Tackle Box. When He gave them an argument, they put the Cuffs on Him & also took His Truck. They also Banned Him from any State Parks. A couple weeks later I saw Him Fishing with a couple friends about 30 feet down from Me on the SS Pier & the FWC hauled His butt off to Jail for Trespassing & Violating a Court Order.

Many people don't realize that natural resources officers, federal or state, are the most powerful in the country. They need no warrant to inspect your stuff and you have to prove you are innocent to get your stuff back. They are not to be trifled with.
A few years ago I tore my Biceps mussel on my left arm. After is healed, I needed to do therapy and practice surf casting to get the strength back. On a pier in my town I have tons of open water to practice on. I was on the lighthouse pier casting out into the bay with my 12' conventional surf rod, with only an 8oz egg sinker on the line. The MD DNR officer I know best came by and checked everyone on the pier, including me. Even though I was not fishing, (no hooks) he still wanted to see my license. I didn't have my tackle box with me, but luckily I have it on my cell phone. This officer knows me by name and checks me often. Still would have likely fined me if I couldn't present my license.

Buy one of those rule where you slide the fish nose up to the bend of the ruler. These are the best. The measure tape, a lot of people measure on top and this can and will add an inch or so. Always lay your fish on top of the rule for the correct measurement.

Rigloser where did u purchase the ruler from? Most metal ruler you can get at your local tackle shop. Those ruler with the bend to place the fish nose right against the bend is the best one!
