So... I arrived to the SSP around 9:00AM. Drove to a few spots trying to locate bait. It was about 9:30-9:45AM the green backs schooling around. I casted my little 6ft net (which is mediocre at best, still practicing but did have my best pancake today... about 90%). I threw the net for about 20 minutes and caught 2 green backs, woot woot! Arms are a little tired at this point , I needed bait so I switched to a sabiki... caught two pins and about 15 greenbacks in 10 minutes. FWC shows up, ok... Guy comes over and ask what I've caught. I show him my bucket then the officer proceeds to ask me for my fishing license, which I have of course... I sparked up conversation regard the no need for a license because it's covered with the State Park/Pier fishing admission. He proceeded with telling me regardless that I still need a shore license, he was a nice and polite enough younger man, I showed him my license and we both continued with our day. Now I can start fishing. Went to one of my favs ... 3rd cast I threw out a 2 inch cut greenie on my medium light tackle spinning rod. Set my rod down to rig up my other rod then my drag starts screaming. I grab my rod and I realize this is bigger than the typical mango I hook up. I work him in, felt like dead weight on the bottom at first then he starts to surface, it's a gag, 18 inches. A picture and a successful return. An hour passes and caught two 10 inch Spanish mackerel, returned of course. The next hour I hook up with 3 mango at about 12 inches, all caught on green backs. I hooked a few Lanes and they were sent back to the water for someone/thing else to have. Packed up after the bite went cold for 30 minutes, took home 3 mangos and a sun burn. This is the best day I've had in the past 4 trips to the pier. My last trip I was skunked, not even a lady fish or catfish. It's never a bad day fishing... today was just better than the past few. Tight lines!

I was also under the impression that you didn't need a license for the Skyway. I have one as I do other kinds of fishing but I bring people with me who don't. Is that true you need a shore license?

So to answer my own questions I looked it up myfwc.com/license/recreational/do-i-need-a-license/ To me it seems he is wrong. Listed under exemptions for needing saltwater licenses "You fish for recreational purposes from a pier with a valid pier saltwater fishing license." I'm pretty sure the Skyway has that? And the under the shoreline license section "Residents who are fishing for a saltwater species (other than mullet in fresh water) from land or from a structure fixed to the land are required to have a no-cost saltwater shoreline fishing license unless they have a regular saltwater fishing license or are exempt." So to me it looks like you are also exempt from having the shoreline license as well. I might print that page and keep it in my glovebox.

It seems that the FWC & the State of Florida has You by the Wallet unless You are in an Exempt Category at the Piers or Anywhere Else. FWC's Quote from Your Link: A fishing license is required to attempt to take fish. If you cast your line, catch nothing, catch and release, or catch and keep and you are not a member of one the groups listed below; you need a license. A saltwater fishing license is also required to attempt to take any native or nonnative marine organisms, such as crabs, lobsters, and marine plants. Licenses and permits are required to help or assist in the take. Someone who is passively participating (setting decoys, calling birds or baiting hooks), whether actively fishing or hunting or not, must have a license. Unfortunately, that is Florida ! No, I think the FWC officer was incorrect. The pier covers your license with that fee. It's a blanket license.
Maybe he's new on the job?
I still carry mine regardless.

If we look further: myfwc.com/license/recreational/saltwater-fishing/vessel-pier-licenses/Optional Licenses (not required): License type Price Saltwater Fishing Pier License (Annual) Issued to an owner, operator or custodian of a pier; covers everyone saltwater fishing from that pier. $501.50 That covers our licenses. The SSP purchases that license (at least they say they cover our licenses). A lot of municipal city piers do too. Kind of like the party boats cover you. But they pay $2000/year. D

That's what I cut and pasted. Pier owners pay $501.50 a year . D If I remember Right, The Skyway Piers are Under The State of Florida Rules & Not Privately Owned. The Redington Beach Pier, Clearwater Beach Pier & Other Private Piers pays that, not the Skyway Piers. "State Park Rules" The Skyway Piers are under State Jurisdiction like Honeymoon Island. Ask Havetofish. He will set the Record Straight if You have any Questions about it.

Take the skyway pier ticket pass flip it over and show it to the FWC patrol. Under Pier rules it states that *No fishing license required on the pier*

I agree with you. It is also my understanding that because we pay to go out onto the Skyway piers we do not need an additional license. It would also be the same thing to fish from Pier 60 in Clearwater or The Reddington Long Pier as you pay to fish from those piers.
This makes me want to check the license the next time we go to the SSP or NSP to be sure they have the Saltwater pier license.
In looking at the regulations it says under "You do not need a license if...Fishing for recreational purposes from a pier that has a valid pier saltwater fishing license" This is on page 24 of the January 2017 saltwater fishing regulations booklet.
People 65 and over do not need the license. Florida residents 65 and over can get the free shoreline license just to have it.

As Tears143 said the FWC officer may be new. There are tons of regulations to learn for all sorts of fishing and hunting along with the exemptions and the officers have a lot to remember and keep straight.

On the ticket given to you at the gate house it states no license is required to fish. It didn't ruin my day but it could easily confuse and frustrate another family.

The officer was a younger man, more than likely new. Like I said, he was polite and friendly, no need to make things akward or difficult. He seemed honest and not being a jerk so he got friendliness in return.

I have a lot of FWC say that you need a stamp to keep snook from fishing pier that already have a license... We are all human but they are in charge of knowing the law and enforcing it. They should have test on the law for FWC every now and then.. like once a new rule comes out or something. Also a fish ID test.. IMHO.
