What type of bait rig do I always see people using at the pier that doesnt require being tipped with bait?? I see guys jigging these rigs and pulling up threads all day long, but the ones I buy get nothing unless theyre tipped with some sort of bait. Is there a specific kind that theyre using?? Can someone link to one of em so I can see what type they are??
Also, a guy next to me had a rig Ive never seen before that was about 6 or 7 connected rings with a red thread-like material running down one side of it, and he had some threadfins in the rings...he said you drop it down and they swim right into the rings and get stuck because theyre attracted to the red material... WTF??? He also said they sell em at the baitshop....are these rigs any good??

Sabikis work without bait the threads will bite on the featherlike material on the hooks hope this helps.

Ive tried jigging the sabikis with no luck. I figured there might be a specific type to use. Ill have to give it another shot next trip out.

I use the small ones sold at Wal-Mart ($1.17) and usually have no problem with the greenbacks or threadfins. I only tip them with squid if I want to catch Pins or Blue Runners. The rings have been around for many years, I remember using them on Indian Rocks Pier in the 60's. Of course Sabikis were not around then, at least as far as I know anyway. I have tried the bigger sabikis and did not have as much luck, so perhaps it may be the size you are using. I guess even the bait may be size sensitive to some degree. If your not already using the smallest size they sell, perhaps you could try that and see if it helps.

You know Jack, I think you nailed it...Ive always used sabikis for catching pins, so I usually buy the ones with the bigger hooks....Ill try to downsize and see if that works. I cant believe I didnt think of that

Jack has nailed it, you can even catch fry bait on the smallest sabikis. You got to remember to jig it a little in the water column where they are. Sometimes they are only on top, sometimes all the down. Sometimes the color of the skirt can make a difference. I have used the ring rigs in my younger days, but not since sabikis came out. We use to call them pilchard rigs. They just get stuck in the ring, problem is you miss ones that are too big or too small, depending on the size of the rig.

I will say that I have tried the Eagle Claw sabiki's a couple of time and have had no luck. I buy the little tsunami's at walmart and they work perfect without tipping them.

The rings we used to use were graduated in size from small at one end to large at the other (can't remember which end). You would jig them similar to the sabiki. I guess they went after what ever glittered (something like my wife). They worked pretty good as I recall. Were a lot easier to store after use also, unlike sabikis.

I've found the sabikis work great without the hooks being sweetened. The gold hooks flash with light, attracting the bait. At night, I hang a couple lanterns down. The light attracts more bait and the hooks shine again. For pins I do use shrimp or squid to tip the hooks.

I was wondering if plain hooks made a difference. Ill pick up one of both and try them side by side and see. Good idea on the lantern....will threads bite em at night as good as in the day if theres light??

For Pins I use a #8 Snelled hook, I hook the loop on a snap swivel along with a 2 oz pyramid sinker and tip with squid. that eliminates catching threads
