Check Out these 2 Sites if You are Targeting Goliath Grouper !
myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/goliath-grouper/
Catching and Releasing Goliath Grouper
What to do when you’ve caught a goliath grouper? ◾Harvest and possession has been prohibited in both state and federal waters off Florida since 1990. ◾Must be immediately returned to the water free, alive and unharmed. ◾Photographs can be taken but only during the active act of release. Photographs or any other activities such as measuring the fish should not delay release in any way. ◾Large goliath groupers should be left in the water during release. The skeletal structure of large goliath grouper cannot adequately support their weight out of the water without some type of damage. If a large goliath is brought on-board a vessel or out of the water, it is likely to sustain some form of internal injury and therefore be considered harvested. ◾Removing smaller goliath groupers from the water to remove hooks is not necessarily a bad practice, but this process must be done with care, using proper fish handling techniques, and return the fish to the water as expeditiously as possible. ◾Learn more about Fish Handling and maximizing fish survival when practicing catch and release.

Dont post pics fishing for and or catching Goliath Grouper, FWC is handing out fines! A good Friend of mine just got a $1600 fine from fwc for targeting the Goliath Grouper(Jewfish) speicies and catching it. According to FWC just touching the fish can land you a hefty fine! You are not to target the fish at all and if you do hook one you are supposed to cut it off without removing it from the water. They do not want you touching the fish in any way shape or form. I think this is a bit ridiculous, but none the less just wanted to let everyone know who has caught and or is targeting the Goliath. Im sure Fwc could do the same here on the forum too, so be careful what you guys/girls post, cause FWC is watching, lol. Keep in mind the Tarpon is not to come out of the water either if you dont posess the $50 Tarpon Tag.

Just a note to add to what MM said. I was at the piers today and I did see a man from FWC walking around with a notebook. Be alert. My pier report will be on separate thread.

Thanks for the heads-up!
I've never targeted Goliath Grouper, but I assume they could theoretically be a by-catch when fishing for other species of grouper.

The FWC People & The State Sheriffs watch People on the Pier from Planes, Helicopters, Their Cars, Unmarked Cars, Some Just Walking Around and Sometimes they Will be Fishing Right Next to You-(That Has Happened to Me Several Times). This is why I Identify & Measure each Fish that I catch. Many Officers are in Plain Clothes as Well. So as a General Rule if Someone comes up to You and asks to Look in Your Coolers or Buckets or Just Looks in Either; Take My Advice, DO NOT REFUSE ! They will Immediately put You in Cuffs if they Are The Law. Believe Me I Have Witnessed it. They can also Immediately Take Your Equipment & Impound your Vehicle. I have seen that around 7 or 8 times in the last 35 years. Especially if You Illegal Catch is in Your Vehicle.

Just don't keep illegal fish and don't anything stupid and you won't have to worry about anything. Know your rules and when in doubt, better be safe than sorry. A fish is not worth a couple of hundreds of dollars. If it's on the boarder, toss it back as ice will shrink it unless you are going home right then and there. Get a good ruler with the bend in them so you can put the fish head right on it and pinch the tail to get the correct measurement on some fish.

I'll add this, $1600 is a load of $$$ to be even near a Goliath, IMHO. I guess reading above and realizing the weight upon itself, it would probably be better for the fish to cut it off after getting it close enough to identify it. It's probably less stress for it to swim off and yak out a hook later at the Goliath Arms Condominiums Under-the-Sea than to handle it and damaging internal organs. D

Goliath Grouper Like Other Varieties are Very Delicate Fish. They just don't like to be Messed with. All You Anglers & Newbies out there need to either Follow the Rules or Read Up on Them before You go Fishing. If Everyone Follows the Rules & Regulations Set by the State & Federal Government, You will be Fine. I would also Like to Add, "STOP TRASHING THE PIERS". Pick Up After Yourself for the Next Person. I saw a little Kid last week step through a Blood Spill on the End of the South Side Pier where a Sting Ray had been Cut Up & the Remains Left on the Pier. His Parents had to take Him to the Hospital to get Him Sewed Up because when He slipped through the Mess, He Gashed His Arm Open. That was Very Stupid on Some One's Part. Throw Your Remains either in the Trash or Over the Rail. If The Piers would get Sued for something someone did, We would all have to Look For a New Place To Fish because the Pier would Most likely have to Shut Down. How about Us coming over to Your Back Yard & Digging a Big Hole for all of Us to Fish In. Get My Drift ! Jerks Good Guys A Few of You out there Know how to Tick Me Off !!!!!!!!!!!

I second that motion, Don't trash the piers. You can add the beaches to that too! It cannot hurt to pick up some of the trash you see out there. Treat it like some of us were taught in Boy Scouts. Leave the site in better shape than you found it.

I agree with MM and Seabird. Stop trashing the piers. Pick up after yourself. Whatever you carry in carry out or use the trashcans. Fishing hooks can end up in someone's foot or tire. Clear plastic wrappers might blow into the water and may be mistaken for jellyfish which is a favorite food of sea turtles and can be deadly as they create a blockage in the turtles intestines. Trash can affect wildlife in other ways also. Thank you to all who use the trashcans and leave the piers cleaner than when they arrived.

The most recent one that ticks every fisherman off is the CCC bridge. When they first open it, you're allowed to fish there, until people were complaining about people leaving hooks, trashes, and etc. They put up a no fishing sign instantly! That would have been an great place to fish off of. I know there's cobia, pompano, black drum... etc off of those bridges but guess what, I'll never be able to fish it unless I am on a boat. Those people who trashed the place ruined it for me and all of you guys as well!

Well put from all of you!
If I may add...dispose of your fishing line IN the designated receptacles! I say IN because one time I walked over to dispose of some line and as I walked away I was in a bird's nest of line all around my feet I almost tripped. Similarly, don't throw line in the regular trash. We know what happens "downstream" with that stuff in the municipal trash.
Fill yer buckets, it beats mowing the lawn...

I have seen lots of places closed to fishing in varied parts of the country. Right here in my complex there are two large ponds posted No Fishing and I bet the reason was people leaving the shoreline a mess. Pretty sad when you cannot fish in waters in your own housing area!
