I had been fishing the skyway for years, never caught a grouper or king mackerel or bonita. Always wanted to catch one but came to terms with the fact that I'll never catch one but would still be fun to try. I'll try to post the rest of the pics tomorrow. Lesson learned: You don't have to be a pro -- anyone can catch a kingfish if they follow good advice from better fisherman!

awesome job man! I haven't got a big one at skyway either! The ones that I have caught look just like a mack.

By the way, Welcome to the Forum. Keep Up the Good Work ! Yes it was right at the very end of SSP. The current was pushing East and I was at the Northeast corner of the pier. One of the best feelings I ever felt -- it was such a rush.

Awesome catch! That thing is huge! Did the reel warm up? I'm sure it must have but I couldn't feel it. I have been a shark fisherman for years and I always had the true story of getting my baits hit on the wrong pole which I was intending for the fish to strike. I'd have a 12/0 hook on my penn senator shark pole with a nice big shark bait only to get a 60 pound blacktip shark devour what was on my spinning reel! I had 150+ pound tarpon take a 2" greenback on my light-duty spinning reel then do a couple backflips and laugh it all the way to the bank! Worst yet, I've never actually caught a shark on my shark pole (penn senator 9/0 with 250 pound test momoi diamond) but have had several dozen baits stolen by flipper! As a result, the only way to prevent big fish from hooking up on your small gear is to no longer carry small gear. My bites and hookup percentage has went way down but at least my sanity has finally been restored. No more watching a massive tarpon or snook break my 10 pound line and 2/0 circle hook. In fact, I even once had my sibiki rig smashed by a hungry tarpon as I was catching pinfish just beyond the toll booth.

Well I have hook a bunch of cobia and tarpoon on my 1k reel... using it to catch pompano.. LOL
I also have hook bonita on my 3k reel and land them... Hooks tarpoon as well.. almost landing them as well..
It's more fun than heavier tackle LOL.

How long was that large King and what was the weight? Great catch!! I don't know the height but I took 2 photos with the 2-liter bottle at the fish's head and tail so I could later calculate it's length. Problem is I don't have an extra 2-liter bottle to measure the height: As for the weight, it was probably 20 pounds. I cut it into 2 sections (and froze it) and discarded the tail so I'll reweigh the 2 pieces later when I thaw them.

That's a great catch! What was the technique? I was free-lining under a balloon but the tide started ripping so fast that the current was bringing my bait to the surface anyway so I just took off the balloon. I was always taught that the best tide for kingfish is a small trickle of current.
