The water is dirty and the wind is bad! I start the day off fishing for pompano at my spot, so hard to keep the jig on the bottom when the wind is blowing S/SE (basically any wind with S or N for skyway). I didn't expect much with the fishing because these two things really kills pompano fishing. Dirty water , pompano won't be able to see the jig unless you toss it right under it noise. Also wind blowing, makes it hard to feel the jig and any bite.
I jig anyways... old habit is hard to let go. Was getting bore after a while and then out of no where I got a hit and it was slow running with it head shaking. Didn't pull very hard. Turn out to be a small jack... Meh.
I keep on jigging and jigging then another hit, and another jacks. Jigging and jigging, my friend got a bite and he said it let go instantly and peck at it again. The mostly fish is the ladyfish. Keep on jigging and then I felt the same bite and set the hook. Up came a ladyfish and it threw my jig. Yep it's a ladyfish alright.
I keep on jigging as I say my old habit is hard to let go. As I turn around, I see one of the other pompano fisherman left for another ground trying to find pompano. A bad sign as these guys fish for pompano year round and they are pretty sure the pompano aren't around. I toss it down jigging some more and then it felt like a snag, then it started moving slowly with a few headshake. Thinking to myself... Damn another jack. It slow move to the right, I just take my time and then it surface. I see the fish now.. it's a damn big pompano! Then it turn left and start going to the other side. I walk with it like I am walking my dog, very slowly. This pompano is waiting for me to horse it in but I am just taking my time to tire it out even though it isn't really running. Also not much I can do with 8lbs test line. So I slowly walked him to the other side of the rocks and then it looks like he's good to be landed even though he didn't run at all. I ask a guy on the bottom if he could help me land it. I pulled it toward him and he was grabing my line and picking the fish head out of the water, not knowing what to do with it. My heart just keep on thumping as that is probably the worst thing to do. He finally got the idea and pick up the line and just toss it onto the bank. Scored! Turn out to be a 17" to the fork pompano!
The other pompano fisherman was taking pictures of it and send it to the other guys that went to fish for them another place. I caught two more after this one in a span of 30mins. Saw the guy came back and we didn't catch anything afterward! LOL
Total of 6 people fishing for pompano but only I have the luck and caught all 3. So pompano this fall has been sucks! Very slow, unless you are lucky like me.
So I went inside to mack fish with my friends. Turn out to be an ok fishing trip with my friends inside. I think I caught the mack you lost mackman. It was around 24-26". It took my live bait and kept on running and I thought it was a bonita at first but it stopped too early and at that point I wasn't sure what it is. Turned out to be a huge mack. In the end I got about 7-9 macks and gave it all to my friend. Once the tide switch it went on fire for a bit and died again. After the died, the ladyfish went back on fire.
Total that came home with me... 3 pompano.
