Was planning on an early morning trip to the south pier tomorrow after a successful first time Friday. Looks like loads of rain for tomorrow morning will push me back until Wednesday.
I'm upgrading my arsenal with some bubble rigs. I only managed to find 1" bubbles not the larger 1 3/4" type in photos of other bubble rigs. I plan on tying a couple with trebel hooks and straws and also a couple with crappie jigs. The guy next to me had one that looked like a crappie jig that he handmade and he was nailing them last Friday.
Pics of rigs to follow

You can go to walmart, they have those specks jigs. It's pretied two piece together. I would cut the line and tie your own. cost is about $1 for a pair only, those work good as well.

Yep, woj. Looks like a ton of rain bubbling up as I type. Hopefully this moisture will be out in a day or 2 and drop our temps.
I'm going to eagerly monitor your use of bubble rigs. Sounds interesting. And yes, them speck jigs are like a buck at Wal-Mart, I can get them even at the inlands stores. I tried under a popping cork but really didn't know what I was doing, only a foot leader. The guys here tell me 6-8 feet under if I recall.
Good luck this week. D

Very good point with that, it's a CRAPpie jig. Tying my own or finding some stronger premade jigs will be in order. I'm just going to test different techniques tomorrow and see how it turns out. Gotcha lure and spoons as backup. Interested to see the straw rig in action, kind of amazes me what I'm reading about it from other websites. They said it's "mackerel candy".

I was reading your notes about bubble rigs. Was not familiar with those set ups. I checked more into it on line and I am going to try them out. It cannot hurt to add to my fishing options.
The rains will help lower the water temps and improve the bite.

I'd bump your leader up to 40# to survive mackeral biting through. Do yourself a favor as has been mentioned before. Replace thise crappie jigs with speck jigs. They're cheap and at Wal-Mart. Good luck and keep us posted. D

I just stopped in at Dogfish tackle and I asked about the bubble rig and they had no idea what I was talking about! But they did have ice fishing rods.

Morning mackerel bite was slow. Mostly big jacks and a couple blue runners. At John's pass for a lunch break and heading back for the afternoon bite. Should be a better tide.
2 largest macks were 17" fork length and caught on live green backs. 2 smaller 13" fork were caught on gold spoons with about 10' leader behind a 2oz sinker.
Straw rig was ok. Got a jack on it 2nd cast. With a better bite ill be able to tell more.

I've seen many YouTube videos and I'm not so sure there's and advantage over a popping cork/bobber. They seem very similar in principal. D

The spoon bite was slow, the live green back bite was slow, overall slow. Left at 7pm with 9 macks in the box for the both of us. Mom was taking long breaks and fishing live freeline, with small weight, and under boober. All with long ~7-8' leader to a small dark hook. They weren't even biting, and sometimes you saw them sniff the green back and fall back down. Crazy slow bite in my opinion. Things got hot between 5-7pm but it was like a hit every 10-20 casts hot (relatively speaking hot lol). People using the rattling green float with orange top were doing the best in my opinion. They had short leaders and spoons on the end. The floats were the ones you get at walmart with a little amount of black metal leader premade and swivels. They seemed to outfish the 2-3oz weight/long leader spoon combos. I didn't get much chance to check the bite on straws as the bite was so slow to begin with so couldn't really tell. My spoons were a mix of Johnson Sprite (I get them locally for $2.99 at academy sports by my gym). The .75 oz version is about 2.5" long and I had both silver and gold. About the same size as the clarkspoon 1 I believe. I didn't compare them side by side. www.academy.com/shop/pdp/johnson-sprite-casting-spoonI used clarkspoons too but only had a small assortment of 0, 1, 2 in my tackle box and lost a couple last week Friday so I got the sprites as backups, glad I did. Lost maybe 4 spoons and 2 gotcha plugs throughout the day. Mom got 2 snags in a row around 120 on the south pier on the slack tide. One was a gotcha plug and other was a spoon. I lost a spoon to concrete rash on the leader, and also lost a gotcha to a big mack. I was super excited when he hit as he made the reel scream but 10 seconds into it the leader came back up all frayed. I learned a lot, I'll be trying the float with spoon method next time and still have the straw rigs to try out. I didn't even both with the jigs.

I have also at times tried an assortment of Techniques to get the Macks to bite. Take it from someone who knows the Macks, Stay up with the 40lb leader. You will not be sorry for the upgrade. I Like Your detail in Your story. Great Job ! The Macks "Sniffed" My Spoon the Other day like You are explaining but they would not take it. They then went over to dpagates & seabirds & took theirs. As the Water Temperature stays warm or goes up a degree or two, the Macks get Lazy and do not want to Bite. The same thing goes for Our Friend the Grouper. Sometimes dealing with the Grouper when it is warm, You have to put the Pinfish or Grunt right in front of him or he will not bite.

I'll up to 40lb. The 30lb worked great on Friday and really I only lost 1 during a fight yesterday too. 1 spoon was to concrete rash (flung off while I casted). I should have checked earlier. I was retying them every now and then to keep the lure end nice and nick free. I think I'll be making a trip Sunday afternoon as we'll be staying Treasure Island for the weekend to have a long overdue date night with the wife on Saturday. Sunday after we checkout of the hotel she is up to go to the pier to relax and enjoy the views and a book while I fish. Hopefully it won't be too packed. The next time after that I'm going to make plans for is going to be the new moon on Tuesday the 13th. I have had luck following solunar calender and I want to see if some cooler water temps and ideal tides will spark the best bite I've had to experience.

The New Moon is the Best Time to Fish. One thing about leader is, it sometimes gets dragged across the Rocks & gets worn out. 40lb leader may not give you as much action but it will reap You more Fish.

Where they the rattling bobbers, like the popping corks? You jerk them and they rattle along the swivel with metal beads. Causes a commotion fish head up to check out and then see your greenie swimming below it. Dang, I've got a couple, Cajun rattler is maybe the brand....or something like that. I'm heading out Saturday, might try it my Clarks or my 1 or 2 Sprites don't work out. Again, thanks for the update, Woj.

Go to McDonald's and use their straws. They are firmer and the red strip iAds nice contrast. Also you can wrap and glue aluminum foil. For extra shine

I replace my leader a couple times an outing it seems at least. That 40# will get nicked all to heck but it does hang in there. But small price to pay to replace it compared to losing a spoon or a big mack... D
