Hi everyone. I'm a newbie here and learning to catch Gag at the skyway. I've been reading posts around the forum about fishing for Gag. When you free lining, do you let the bait go all the way out and reel it in then start again, or you let the bait stay at a certain spot along the rockpile? Thanks in advance. ( great great forum )

This is what i do , in a couple differant styles. Freelinging i use 50 plus lb braided line with a 3 to 6 ft flourocarbon leader 50 lb Yozuri pink ,tied with the FG Knot Live pinfish larger the better, Bluerunners being best option. 4 to 6 inches is fine. Hook just behind the Anal fin no sinker or leader on and outgoing tide.
If the weather is crapty, a nice fillet of Bonita anchored with a 4 oz sinker fishfinder rigged. Although thats usually a colder time of year fishing.Place in rod holder.
If the current is really ripping a 1 oz sinker on a fishfinder is reccomended

When you free lining, do you let the bait go all the way out and reel it in then start again, or you let the bait stay at a certain spot along the rockpile? Thanks in advance. ( great great forum ) First Off, Most Grouper usually prefer a Water Temperature of around 82 degrees or lower. When the water gets above 82 degrees the Grouper move out into the Ship Channel where the deeper waters are cooler. When the water temperature gets back to about 82 degrees they head back toward the Skyway Piers. You find most Grouper Hiding under a Structure or Hiding around the rock piles at the Skyway Piers. Also Most Grouper Bite between 1-2 hours before High Tide and 1-2 hours after High Tide. I use a Heavy Duty Rod with 60-80 lb. test line with 100 lb. leader with a #6 Circle-Hook with a Nice Size Pinfish or Grunt or Blue Runner. The Larger the Bait the Bigger Grouper You usually get. The reason I use a Heavy Duty Rod is because I have snapped rods before out there catching grouper. If You ever Meet a Guy named Scooter out there, he will tell You. This happened about 15 Years ago. Then You have to Pull him in by Hand Like I had to. The reason I use a heavier leader is because the rocks & concrete sometimes cuts Your line if the Pinfish or whatever You are using as Live Bait is swimming near the sea bottom and You get a taker he will head for the rocks or concete & then possibly cut You off.
Let your bait drift out over the rock piles. Wait about 5 - 10 minutes over the projected area. If You do not get a hit move over to the next rock pile. If You still do not aquire any takers try the next Rock Pile. So on so forth. If You still have no Luck, Try another day.

Many times the Gags will hit a Deep Diver Lure. Check out this Video Below:
