So your new to fishing the Skyway Piers. Welcome Aboard. While there are many ways to catch fish, over the years many tips and techniques have been posted here in this section of the forum. Its not that members do not like to help, its just that chances are your question has been already asked and no one likes to keep answering the same questions over and over again. So first read through all the Stickies and then you can be more specific on your questions if you have them.

In order to compact some of the stickies I have merged the "Useful Link" and "Master Good Info" Stickies in the Fishing Forum. Please do not leave comments or questions in the the sticky. Create a new thread below the stickies in the fishing forums and ask the question if necessary.
Also if you have any suggestions on how to better improve our Board, send me P.M.

Hello all. My name is Ryan and I'm new to the forum. I've been reading the forum since August so I finally pulled the trigger this weekend and made an account. I'm new to Florida, (As everyone I talk to is.) I moved here from Ohio (Cincinnati) in August to take a new job in the St. Pete area. I currently am living in the Lakewood Ranch area and after me and my son tried all the local fishing spots we determined that the Skyway pier had some of the best fishing we found (from shore.) I've learned a lot in the past few months about fishing saltwater and love reading this forum where I learn even more everyday. Up until now me and my son have only caught mango's, one small gag, flounder, and some jacks. We've yet to catch our first red or snook. We fish mostly bottom rigs with shrimp or fiddlers and only recently did I learn about throwing crank baits for jacks. We know there no good to eat but they sure are fun to catch. Especially when there about 5-7 lbs. More fun to haul in than the small mango's we usually catch. We're in the process of upgrading our gear and hope to catch some fish larger than 14". Maybe the wife will surprise me for Christmas .

Hi guys. I'm Carl. over 30 years experience pier and boat fishing the northern Gulf Coast. But i am changing careers soon and will be moving down to Tampa in June 2019, so I decided to join up and start gleaning information. Visited the Fort Desoto SP last week during a business trip to St. Pete, very impressed by what i saw there. Locals I talked to were very nice and willing to talk shop. Only on the inshore pier 10 minutes and saw a nice whiting landed and a big snook C&R. Lots of bait around. See y'all online and in person next summer.

Nice to meet you Carl and welcome to the forum. I’ve fished the northern gulf some near fort walton/ Destin. That’s a good fishery. I loved the fort Walton Pier. Congrats on the move.

Hi,
Been in Lakeland Florida about 4 years now, mostly fished freshwater. Would be nice to find some other Pier fishermen from Lakeland and make it a weekly get together and trade off driving. I have read many of the Sticky, lots of valuable information here, thanks to all for that. At my age, good to hear there are restrooms available. lol Looking forwards to a trip to the SSP in the very near future.
Thanks again and Regards

New Forum member here. Born in Sarasota, fished the bay & gulf constantly. sea walls, bridges, bridge fenders, docks, beach, boats, you name it. Moved away in 1980(!) and just now bought a place in Dunedin to start moving towards retirement.
I've been fishing the dog beach at Honeymoon, fishing the bridges on the causeway, fishing the dock at my condo. So far... a decent snook, sm trout, sting ray, 2 sharks, 1 ladyfish, grunts and porgies. A slow start but I'll get the hang of it.
Planning to head down to the northside Skyway (just cause it's closest) because there sure seems that there's always something biting down there. Looking forward to bumping into some of you on the bridge.

Hello! I don't actively fish the Skyway pier since I live on the other side of the state, but I do visit a couple times a year and i try to go to the Skyway whenever I can. While I have fished here multiple times before I would just like to be informed for when I visit. I'll be coming for Thanksgiving and plan to fish the north pier for preferably pompano and mackerel, but the reports don't look very good. Looking forward to updates!

Stay in the East coast for pompano and maybe mack as well. The water will be too cold for pompano in the West Coast. They will be in certain area but most likely not at skyway. Water flow from the panhandle down to the west coast of FL, while water from south FL flows up the east coast of FL, therefore the water on the east coast is usually warmer. Pompano run there later than the West coast. Usually around thanksgiving is really good.

Hello all, another newbie checkn in:-)
Pier and yak fisher from Ohio, been in flordia 2 years now. I like to target bigger fish (goliaths excluded lol) for the table or not. Anclote pier is my local stomping geound but, had recently visited the north skyway pier in early december and have been back a few times since.
To the powers that be thank you very much for putting this site and the stickys together. Perhaps I will be able to contribute some info at one point. As of present my braggable fish count is null in the gulf but, have been avid fisher for a good while and have landed some notable fish from my home state.

New to this forum. Old timer here. I pier fish quite a bit with my Grandson who loves to fish. He got me started a few years back. We usually fish the pier at Topsail Beach NC but have fished the piers on the East coast of Florida. Jacksonville Beach pier before a lot of it washed away. Have done the piers at Daytona. North Carolina water temp is too cold this time of the year for ocean fishing. We tried a couple of times with no luck. Usually travel to Fl. in the winter to get in a little fishing. We decided to try the West coast of Florida this winter. Third week in January and we are coming back the end of April. The Sunshine Skyway pier looks very inviting and we plan on fishing off it in about two weeks for three days. Waste of time this time of the year??? If not what type of fish can we expect to catch? How about the fishing the end of April. Thanks in advance for any replies.

In April will be good for macks, kings, sheephead.. etc etc etc

We will probably come down to check out the area this month win, lose or draw. At least we can maybe get some warm sun time out on the pier even if we don't catch a lot it is still relaxing.

Hello all, I just moved to the east bay from Orlando. I haven’t fished the skyway yet, but driving over the bridge almost daily is making me crazy. I’ve already learned a lot lurkering through some posts and hopefully I meet some of you out fishing one day.

Quick Update from this Mobilian but-soon-to-be Floridian: We're in the process of buying our house in Tampa and will be moving down over the next three months. New job starts May 1. I'll be a bachelor for a while until the family arrives, that will give me some time to fish. I hope to see y'all on the pier during May!
