I haven't been to the Skyway in a while, last time I went was in the early summer and didn't have much luck the last few trips. Lurking the board, it seems things have been slow for months.
I'm going fishing this weekend, and was thinking fishing the flats, looking at EG Simmons Park or places near Apollo Beach. Don't feel like making the extra long trek from Lakeland to the Skyway, just to risk coming up empty.
Has anyone had decent outings at Simmons or anywhere near Apollo beach? I've never tried flats fishing, and will be on the shore (need to convince the wife to eventually let me get that flats boat!).
I'm looking to target speck trout and hopefully redfish and/or flounder. I'd greatly appreciate some tips or advice. Thanks in advance.

Apollo beach is no good, water is too hot there.
I would try Simmons park but never fish there. If flat is what you are looking for I would try the ft desoto area.

Thanks! I heard Apollo beach was better during the winter due to the warmer waters. Will give Simmons or Desoto a try.

I camp at Simons from time to time. the fishing is pretty good. There is a semi deep chanel at the far right corner of the park and to the left of the boat ramp. If you go to the left side of the beach you can wade down the shore to the cut. Have caught red's, trout, flounder, grovers, and a occational flounder. I normally freeline live shimp into the channels or toss a gold spoon.
