Trip report NSP (May 15th 2014)
I pulled a 14" mackerel out of the freezer and hooked it up to a 14/0 hook, and jammed the hook inside a knife incision and tried to conceal the knife as best I could. Tossed the bait a few yards as best I could, from my penn senator 9/0. Within 5 minutes, something takes it. (been fishing for sharks & biggens for long time--never had a bite so fast!)
It made two runs, but I didn't want to set the hook until it had time to swim with it and eat the fish fully (tossing it around in mouth until head points down throat) since that is what I was taught. The fish gave two good runs when it felt the least bit of resistance.
Tide and current were slack (this is literally a few hours ago, maybe 5pm) so a 3 ounce weight was all that was needed. As we let the fish take line in free spool, we hurried back to shore, preparing to fight the fish and land him, take photos, and release. The line eventually slow down, stopped, and after another 2 minutes, I felt pretty sure the fish either turned towards us, or more likely spit the hook.
All in all, it was a good trip. Definitely feels good to take a break from the skyway once in a while. Sorry no pics, but we had no fish.

those are what keep us coming back, was out today. didnt have my limit yet but didnt put on the sunscreen soon enough. tired, burnt and hot, hungover. Last minnow in the bucket i am saying to the guy next to me "yeah this is my last fish". Put it on toss it donw, rod dips down, uh oh do i have another one? Wait this is a little heavy- then the fish get mad, runs 40 pound test off my pole for a good dozen feet then cut on a piling. Probably a big snook, but i like to think it was just a big ray to deal with the loss. Fished for another 50 min.s

I laughed out loud when I read that. So funny, it prompted me to sign up for the board and comment. I have this picture in my head of a guy fightin' the hell out of his ass on the beach. ("A Few Butt Shakes"...."the hook was tossed". That is instant classic!) Better luck next time amigo. If you ever land the ever elusive buttfish it will be epic! New to the area, new to the board. Went to SSP last night from about 2000 to 0300 this morning. Lot's of bait, and put a few Mangroves in the bucket, but that was it. A beautiful night though. I love that place. Am happy to have found it and this source of info as well. Being new to the whole saltwater bit (coming from a landlocked state), I was happy to have found this place for the experience that you all so willingly share. Many Thanks, ~Fuzz~
