Thursday the 27th, I took a day trip w/ some friends visiting from New Jersey. I decided to drive on to the South pier to show them the sites. I was embarrassed at all the garbage everywhere. Some trash cans were over flowing while others were empty. TONS of beer & soda cans rolling all over. A huge wad of fishing line in the middle of the road as well. Cars dble parked leaving barely 1 lane open. Stopped so my friend could use the bathroom. I warned her but she really had to go. Needless to say she turned right around and got back in my truck after seeing & smelling the interior. She said someone crapped in a sink. I don't blame the crews that are paid to empty the cans or clean the bathrooms as much as I blame the inbred animals that treat the piers like their private garbage dump.

some people are just inconsiderate and causing everyone trouble...
The trash on the floor could be from windy condition blowing over the trash can.

You are rite Tears but when I stopped to pick up the wad of line, I looked for a recep. for discarded line. 1st 2 were full of garbage. Noticed no cans tipped over. As I said, it was embarrassing as hell.

I don't know if I mentioned it in my SSP report/review about a month ago, but I will say I thought there was a lot more trash and much fuller trash cans and loose trash around them on the south pier than the north pier. That was something I noticed very clearly on my one and only trip to the south pier. I didn't know if it was just that day or if it was always like that.

our tax money hard at work Actually not your tax dollars..The baitshop and maintenance is run by Pier Associates. thats correct the pier is independently owned. And the greedy owners only want profit. They will not sink a dime into what is left of the once beautiful Skyway fishing pier. When the piers get a good cleaning it is due to an overzelouse person who does not know the owners could give a chit. So some days they are super clean, then this good do person realises his/her hard work goes un noticed or apreciated so they stop .. Hence chitty piers

Ha, the only cleaning the pier gets is high wind and heavy rain. Thank god for tropical storms. Anyone know the name of the actual perso or Parties that own the pier? The company is: Pier Associates, Inc. Skyway State Fishing Pier P.O. Box 146 Terra Ceia Island, FL 34250 Email: skywaypiers@wildblue.net I believe the father retired and the daughter took over the management. Can't remember the names, but they are somewhere, cause I remember complaints people were making to them back when the pier closing was being discussed. May even be in this forum somewhere, but the search function here leaves a lot to be desired. Big Mike could tell you. Edit: This link shows it is Janes Tyson companies.findthecompany.com/l/19694448/Pier-Associates-Inc-in-Saint-Petersburg-FL

Aren't the piers designated as a state park? If so, it must be run by a management company.

The piers are a state park and are owned by the state. My guess is that the bait stores are private concessions that pay the state to operate those concessions and part of their contract is that they're responsible for maintaining the restrooms and cleaning up the trash.

Correct. Pier Associates are responsible for everything from the road up and DOT is responsible for the pier itself.

Whomever is responsible, they are doing a terrible job. I have never seen it anywhere near as bad as that day. I can't imagine that they're losing money. With the bait-shops being concessions and paying rent, where's the overhead other than the $7.50 an hr. gate keeper?

Pier Associates are the concessions and unless its changed the gate keeper is employed by the park system. The manager makes a big difference. You hardly ever see the same issues with the North Pier because of its manager..Big Mike.

I'm very glad this conversation was fair and not 1-sided. The NSP is actually run quite well which is why I stay away from the SSP unless it is grouper season.
