whats the best cheap way to keep the bait alive? do you ever use cut up bait.. like cut greenbacks.. etc??
where is the best place to hook the fish so that it stays alive??

Live, dead, frozen, artis...you can use just about any bait out there.
Most folks here castnet or sabiki their own bait (pinfish, greenbacks, threadfins, grunts, blue runners, ladyfish, etc).
I use live and cut greenbacks all the time, sometimes live pinfish.
You can hook greenbacks below the dorsal fin on their backs, Ive seen some guys hook them near the tail. For freelining pinfish, hook em just above the anal fin so they swim downwards toward structure.
Cheapest and easiest way to keep bait alive is a bucket with an aerator. Dont buy one from the bait shop, Wal mart has bubble boxes for like $8 (they use 2 "D" batteries), you can use any bucket. Just replace the water in it every so often and youll be fine.

as for ariators, i would stay away from the white ones. I forgot what they are called but i went thru 2 of them last year. The battery life on them aint to great either.
I asked a lady at the bait shop going out to fdp and she recommended one that is black and screws shut with a nob on the bottom, it fires up good everytime and i still have the same batteries in it from when i first bougt it.

I normally use a live well, but to separate baits sometimes I use an aerator.
The 3 year old one I had finally died a month ago, so I bought the $15 one at Walmart. The plastic case its packaged in, also serves as a cover for it when in use. This will help keep the salt water out of it and it will last longer. The battery case cover has a neopreme seal.

Tyler, what kind of aerator are you talking about (what brand), I have the Cool Bubbles aerator and lid that fit any 5 gallon bucket (from Wally world). It works great, but goes thru batteries pretty fast. Plus a friend of mine's wife works at Dunkin Doughnuts, and he gets me these buckets that are like 3 or 3 1/2 gallons that they get there glaze in. they just throw them out, so he has gotten me about 10 of them. They are the same diameter as a 5 gallon bucket just shorter. Sometimes it's nice when moving around to have a bait bucket that has room, but doesn't weigh as much as a 5 gallon bucket full of water and bait!!

lol an even cheaper way to keep your bait alive is to buy a bait bucket...one of those yellow and white ones which you tie a rope to it and drop it into the water...and when ever you need bait you just pull it up....no batteries needed just arms...
and on the topic on bait it depends i find if your free lining to hook the fish trough its nose...unless ur like freelining for grouper then you need to do what goindeep said and hook it above its anal fin so it swims toward the bottom...

Try and balloon some live eels at the end of the SSP. You will not be disappointed.

buzz... want to catch something this weekend? give this a try. Rig a medium pole with 20lb braid. Tie on @ 4 to 6 feet 20lb leader. At the end of the leader use a silver gotcha plug. Walk the skyway mile until you see some folks catching mackerel. Walk up to the rail and cast that plug as far as you can. once the plug hits the water... hang your rod over the rail with the rod tip pointing down. count to five Then start reeling that lure as fast as you can while twitching that rod point under the pier. with quick jerks. Keep reeling and reeling until you feel that fish bite. Lift the tip rod tick up over your head and fish on!!!!! No bite??? do it again and again. Sometimes you have to slow the lure down but keep twitching that rod. After each fish caught check that leader before casting again. Those Mack's are tough on leaders. Any fraying. Cut and re-tie goos luck and let's kn ow how you did. We want pics? lol
